NEWBURN WARD ROUND UP

September 4, 2008 6:27 PM

NEW SCHEME TO HELP LOCAL RESIDENTS

A new scheme has started in Newcastle to help the elderly and disabled stay in their homes.

Anchor is offering a range of services, including recommending tradesmen to carry out repairs and help and advice.

The organisation also runs its own small repairs service for jobs like fitting a plug, hanging a curtain rail or fixing a tap.

Councillor Mike Curthoys says: "This service will be of great help to older people and the disabled who want those little jobs around the house done by reputable tradesmen.

"In addition Anchor's small repairs service offers free quotes and only charges £5 per hour plus the cost of any parts for the work it carries out."

LOCAL GROUPS WIN CASH GRANTS

The Lib Dem-run ward committee has recently awarded local groups over £3,000.

The Throckley Northside Tenants and Residents Association applied for a £250 grant, which helped fund several local events.

Throckley Community Centre received £750 to help the Throckley Residents Action Group inform local people about the Water Works development.

The Bouncing Higher Programme, which was a council-run summer programme for young people in the ward, was also given £2,000 to help its work.

PETROL STATION PLANS SUBMITTED

A planning application has been submitted to the city council to redevelop Throckley's petrol station.

Developers want to build five new houses and a three-storey block of flats at the site on Hexham Road.

"If you wish to comment on the proposal please contact the planning department on 232 8520 quoting reference 2008/1287/01/DET," says Councillor Mike Lynch.
