:: PUBLIC CONSULTED ON WEST END PLANS

A draft plan for the regeneration of the West End, which includes Westgate College, is undergoing public consultation before being submitted to the Government.

The college site could have a number of uses, including retail, offices and housing. The public consultation ends on October 24.

Residents can have their say by contacting the West NEWcastle Regeneration Centre, Old Library, Armstrong Road, tel 0191 277 1800 or downloading a comment form at

Councillor Colin Daglish says: "Both of Newcastle's universities have stated they are not interested in using the site for student accommodation. I am pleased that the sports facilities will remain open to public use."

:: NEW SCHEME TO HELP LOCAL RESIDENTS

A new scheme has started in Newcastle to help the elderly and disabled stay in their homes.

Anchor is offering a range of services, including recommending tradesmen to carry out repairs and help and advice.

The organisation also runs its own small repairs service for jobs like fitting a plug, hanging a curtain rail or fixing a tap, which costs £5 an hour plus the cost of the parts.

Councillor Colin Daglish says: "This service will be of great help to older people and the disabled who want those little jobs around the house done by reputable tradesmen."

:: PUPILS WELCOMED INTO NEW SCHOOL

The new Excelsior Academy in Scotswood opened its doors to students for the first time in September.

The multi-million pound school replaced Westgate College, which closed - although the sports facilities have remained open for public use.

Councillor PJ Morrissey says: "I wish every student at the academy all the best in their studies."
