ROYAL GEORGE CARE HOME PLAN REJECTED

April 1, 2009 11:15 PM

Councillors have rejected a planning application to build a residential care home on the site of the former Royal George pub on Brunton Park.

Newcastle City Council's Development Control Committee refused the developer planning permission.

The plans would have also seen the demolition of 14 Princes Road in order to build the elderly care home on the site of the Royal George.

Councillors were concerned that the plans would mean that the site was over-developed - affecting the local area for residents.

Also, the proposed building's height, scale and site would be overbearing impact on nearby residents and result in an unacceptable loss of sunlight.

Councillor David Down, who addressed the meeting as chair of the Parklands Ward Committee, said: "Once again, several hundred objections were received from residents and councillors deeply concerned by the loss of a local amenity on Brunton Park.

"However, the campaign is not over because we understand that the developer will be submitting a new application."
