Lib Dem Parliamentary Spokesman for Newcastle East Greg Stone will be a speaker at a fringe event at the Lib Dem conference in Bournemouth in September. Greg will address a CLES (Centre for Local Economic Strategies) and localism think-tank Localis event on how localism can help to support the economy during a downturn.

Greg said "I am pleased that Lib Dem controlled Newcastle city council's role in supporting local businesses, flexibility on business rates, creating new apprenticeships, and supporting new resource centres helping people made redundant has been recognised, and look forward to the opportunity to contributing to the debate on this important issue. Unlike the other parties who merely pay lip service to it, the Liberal Democrats have a deep and long-standing commitment to localism. With a genuine devolution of powers to local government, even more could be achieved to stimulate economic growth and enhance quality of life."

The conference will also debate important issues such as globalisation, the military covenant with our armed forces, the future of the East Coast rail franchise, the recession, and renewable energy and CO2 emissions.
