What's happening on Haddricksmill improvement scheme?

Newcastle East Lib Dem spokesman Greg Stone is keeping up pressure on proposed improvements to the Haddricksmill junction at South Gosforth, on the northern boundary of Newcastle East constituency. The junction is a notorious pinch-point at peak times with the double-roundabout configuration often extremely difficult to negotiate as six different roads converge.

The Lib Dems have been lobbying for plans to improve Haddricksmill junction to be included in Local Transport Programme (LTP) funding for the North East, but it looks unlikely that the scheme will proceed during the current LTP round which expires in 2011.

Greg Stone said "This junction is often dangerous and helps to create an air quality hotspot. I support plans to create an Air Quality Management Area from Blue House roundabout to Haddricksmill roundabout given the congestion in this area, but I also want to see improvements to this junction included in the next LTP round of funds. The current situation is extremely unsuitable, but I am concerned there is a long queue of LTP schemes which are waiting to go ahead in Tyne & Wear, including big schemes like the Silverlink/A19 junction improvement on the Coast Road. Nevertheless I and my Lib Dem colleagues will keep on pressing for Haddricksmill to be upgraded".
