Lib Dem parliamentary spokesman for Newcastle East Greg Stone has reacted with concern to Office of National Statistics figures which lay bare the effects of the recession and of the failure of the Labour Government to effectively tackle worklessness.
Nationally,almost two million children now live in households where no-one works, following a rise of more than 250,000 since the start of 2009. One in six children now lives in a home with no adult in employment - a statistic that looks set to further undermine Labour's commitment to halve child poverty by 2010 and ending child poverty by 2020. Meanwhile, the number of people living in workless homes rose by half a million to 4.8 million - or 1 in 6 - in the last three months.
Greg Stone said "I have contacted the ONS to ask for their estimate of the figures for Newcastle, as I am concerned that the local picture could be even worse, given that the North East is one of the worst affected regions for unemployment, with 23% of households not working.
"I am deeply concerned by these trends which show that after 12 years of Labour government, worklessness is increasing relentlessly in this region, with inevitable effects on health and poverty. Labour has clearly failed, but there is no evidence that a Conservative government will do any better for the North East"
