NEWS IN BRIEF FROM ACROSS WEST GOSFORTH

October 15, 2009 1:20 PM

:: NEW CONVENIENCE STORE

The Council has received an application for the sale of alcohol at a new shop set to open at the corner of Ivy Road and Salters Road in the former premises of Motor

World.

It is understood that this application comes from a small business.

:: PLAY ACTIVITY PLANS

£1000 was provided by the ward committee to pay for the play activities for children this summer in the Customer Service Centre.

:: TRAFFIC MONITORING

Engineers are monitoring traffic in Kenton Road between the Elmfield roundabout and Grandstand Road, following concern from residents about road safety at peak times.

Assessments will help to determine whether additional traffic management measures are needed.

:: ANTI-SOCIAL BEHAVIOUR TARGETED

Residents in Henry Street have been complaining about taxi drivers parking and causing disturbance in a car park adjacent to their homes late at night.

Councillors are in discussion with the police and Council officials about the possibility of restricting access to the car park after 6.30pm.

The car park is used by office workers during the day.

:: NEW FUNCTIONS FOR WARD COMMITTEE

Plans are being drawn up to extend the remit of ward committees in ensuring that services meet local priorities.

Local councillors are to be involved in setting service standards for some local services.

In West Gosforth priority is being given to measures around traffic management, leisure provision, street tree management, graffiti, weed killing, fly tipping and anti-social behaviour.

Residents will be consulted about the proposals.

:: SUPPORTED HOUSING PLAN

Your Homes Newcastle is proposing to build a development of fifteen units of supported accommodation for young families on the site of the former Star Centre in Kenton Road.

This would bring a derelict site back into use and provide a safe environment for children.

The Council's development control committee will determine the planning application in the near future.
