Greg takes up East End bus issues with Stagecoach

Newcastle East Lib Dem parliamentary spokesman Greg Stone has lobbied Stagecoach over issues concerning the 18 and 32 weekend bus services between High Heaton and Byker via Newton Road and Heaton Road.

Residents had expressed concern after waiting a very long time between services and the limited Saturday morning operation of these buses. Greg has raised this matter with Stagecoach's regional management, and has been advised that efforts are underway to review the frequency of these services as part of Nexus's network design project which is intended to ensure a more comprehensive and convenient route network across the city.

Greg said "These 'tertiary' routes often don't get as many passengers as the core routes into and out of the city centre, but they are often vital for local people without their own transport to get to work or college, local shops, doctors and dentist appointments, evening classes, and the like. It is important that such services are safeguarded and not withdrawn.

"I will continue to monitor the 18 and 32 services in the area, and have advised Stagecoach that I will be keeping up the campaign to restore a north-south service between Gosforth and the East End, serving Cochrane Park and Benfield Road".
