Lib Dem parliamentary spokesman for Newcastle East Greg Stone has paid a return visit to the Union Society at Newcastle University, nearly fifteen years after graduating from the University. He visited the editor and news editor of the Courier student newspaper for a lengthy interview about the Newcastle East election campaign and his stance on student-related issues.

Greg said "It was good to be back in the Union and I enjoyed a lengthy discussion with the Courier on issues ranging from council policy on student housing and tuition fees through to reckless drinks promotions targeting students and the BNP's appearance on Question Time.

"I was happy to counter some of the misleading propaganda circulated by Labour and the landlords on the council's student housing policy and made it clear that our strategy is about increasing the quality and quantity of student accommodation and giving students more choice, not trying to move them out of particular neighbourhoods.

"I was also interested to hear about student concerns about the crisis in student loan administration as well as their fears over the Conservative proposal to increase student tuition fees to £7000 per year"

"I am meeting the University's deputy Vice Chancellor in November to discuss higher education issues and it was very helpful to be able to hear the student perspective on university issues at first hand. I will be taking up a number of issues with the University on student loans and fees."
