Success for Lib Dem #1 super-route campaign

Bus shelter without bus stop signLib Dem parliamentary spokesman for Newcastle East Greg Stone has welcomed plans by the city council and Nexus to upgrade facilities on the #1 Super-route which is operated by Stagecoach from Four Lane Ends to the West End, serving Cochrane Park, North Heaton, Heaton, the Addison / Grafton estate, Heaton Park, Portland Road, Sandyford Road, and the city centre en route.

The proposals will see new bus shelters installed at a number of locations, along with minor junction and corner improvements to help the bus navigate more easily by keeping cars from parking and blocking the way at key points.

Greg said "I regularly use the #1 and know it's an important service for many people in Newcastle East including people going to work in the city centre or going to and from university.

It's good to know that the Lib Dem campaign to remove "bottlenecks" on the route as it goes through residential estates has been successful, helping to make the service faster and more reliable, as I know that certain points have been extremely difficult for drivers to negotiate, including Meldon Terrace corner and the top of Whitefield Road.

Unlike Labour, who wanted to remove bus stops from the route, we're also improving waiting facilities with new shelters on the way. "
