Newcastle East Lib Dem parliamentary spokesman Greg Stone has commended the achievement of East End 11 year olds and local primary teachers following the publication of top class results in the national Key Stage 2 SAT tests.

Byker Primary School secured a stunning 48-point rise in attainment with 83% of pupils reaching the target Level 4 or better, whilst St Anthonys secured a 28% rise in number of students reaching Level 4 in both Maths and English, and West Walker was close behind with a 23% rise.

Overall the number of 11 year olds in the city achieving the key government target of Level 4 or above in both English and Maths has risen to 70%, compared to 62% in 2005, with 30% now reaching Level 5 in English and 34% reaching Level 5 in Maths.

Greg Stone said "I am delighted with the progress being made by the city's primary schools and the improving results of our 11 year olds bodes well for future attainment levels for our secondary schools in future.

Labour sneered when the incoming Lib Dem administration announced a review of educational attainment in the city, but I am delighted that our approach is paying dividends with considerable year on year improvement since the Lib Dems took control of the city council.

Newcastle's performance is now at or above the national average and is continuing to improve. A Lib Dem government would decrease class sizes for primary schools even further, allowing for even greater improvements in attainment"
