    • On the Buses
Nexus has completed consultation on the proposals for secondary bus routes in the Fenham area. The proposals have been favourably received in most areas of Fenham Ward. However there has been strong opposition in the Fenham Hall Drive area to the proposed relocation of services 15 and 32. Nexus has assured Councillor Colin Daglish, Councillor Mitzi Emery and PJ Morrissey that full weight will be given to these objections, and we are confident that the services will be retained. • Birchvale's taking shape
Work is underway to build much-needed new homes in Fenham. The development on land at the corner of Birchvale Avenue and Greentree Square will be a mixture of social and private housing. This means some homes will be for sale and others for rent. Councillor Mitzi Emery said: "To get these homes built in the current economic climate is a real achievement and the developers, YHN and the council should be congratulated. "Local residents are all very excited about the development, which will breath life into this area of Slatyford." • Tackling Crime and Disorder in Fenham
Action has been taken to reduce youth disorder on the King George V playing field. After many complaints to local councillors and the police a joint initiative was set up. This involved local people reporting every incident to police. Police also carried out extra patrols and used diversionary measures to engage those causing the trouble. Councillor Mitzi Emery said: "The field now has a play area feel to it again. Local children and parents can use the fields without fear of the gangs which plagued the area. The police will continue to monitor the area for further incidents and I urge local people to call the police if they see or hear any disorder." Meanwhile, mobile CCTV has been used to tackle problems of anti-social behaviour in the Hadrian Road area. • LIB DEMS INVEST IN THE FUTURE
Millions of pounds look set to be spent on Newcastle's communities during the economic crisis. The Lib Dem-run city council plans to invest £21 million into energy efficiency, regeneration and boosting the economy. The cash will be borrowed, but council tax will still have to go up by 2.9% to cover the loan, meaning a rise of 65p per week for a family living in a Band D household. The Lib Dem council leaders are sticking to their pledge to keep the rise below the rate of inflation for the fifth year running - even though the amount Newcastle has been given by the Government has increased by only 1.75%, the joint lowest in the country. The three-year investment will secure jobs in the face of the credit crunch. Councillor Peter Allen, executive member for resources, said: "We've kept to our original election pledge when we took control of the council - bills down at or below the rate of inflation - and we're now delivering for the fifth year running. "At the same time we've invested extra in the services people have told us are most important to them, such as our hugely popular rapid response teams, improving the environment in every ward round the city. "We've achieved all this because we run an efficient operation, and we'll be tightening our belts further next year to the tune of £20 million plus, whilst still protecting frontline services." The council is saving around £20 million by cutting 500 posts - many of them managers and administrative staff. Front line jobs will be protected. The £21m investment will be spent on projects people in the city have raised as a priority, including: :: £7m extra spending on road and pavement repairs and improvements. :: £1.4m extra on grants for disabled facilities to make improvements in people's homes. :: £75,000 extra on Newcastle WarmZone, helping those facing fuel poverty. :: £800,000 extra on works at Walker Quay. :: £4m extra in a new regeneration fund to support various schemes across Newcastle. By using local external contractors for building work, jobs will be secured and no manpower will be taken away from frontline services. A scheme to help low-income first-time buyers with shared equity loans and cash from the Government and developers is on the cards, and more staff to help homeowners avoid repossessions. The council is also pledging to work with developers to help them out as the demand for homes drops, to increase the amount of affordable social housing in the city and to offer support packages for small businesses. Council leader John Shipley said: "As well as keeping council tax bills down, and protecting frontline services, there is much that the council can do to help businesses and individuals survive the economic recession. "Our budget proposals includes an extra £21 million of spending on infrastructure and regeneration projects - which will help keep many people in work in the construction industry locally. "We're also continuing with a package of interventions to help people in debt crisis, to help housebuilders and homebuyers alike, and to help small businesses. "Without this extra spending package, our council tax bills would have been even lower, but we think that supporting the city's economy through this crisis is simply the right thing to do." The council's draft budget proposals will go out for consultation before being put to councillors in March. • MITZI IS THE LOCAL CHOICE FOR FENHAM WARD
Local resident Mitzi Emery's campaign to be our next councillor is off to a flying start. She has made issues such as crime and improving services her top priorities. Mitzi is married with three adult children and manages a local bakers. She is the popular choice to be our new councillor. She has lived in the area her whole life and is well known by many people. Mitzi is the only candidate who lives in Fenham Ward - Labour's lives in Gosforth. Pundits are predicting that it will be a two-horse race between Mitzi and Labour in the by-election on January 29. The Conservatives are in fourth place here and cannot win. Mitzi says: "Living locally, I know the issues that local people face. I will be a strong voice for Fenham Ward and am already working with PJ Morrissey and Colin Daglish." • CARE SERVICES AMONG THE BEST IN THE COUNTRY
Newcastle's adult care services are among the best in the country, according to independent inspectors. The annual inspection of Adult Services by the Commission for Social Care Inspection rated the council's services as "excellent" - making them a top-rated three star service. Inspectors found services in four of seven assessed areas - including quality of life, health and increased choice and control - to be of the highest possible standard, as well as stating that services have a "promising" potential to improve even further. Fenham Ward Campaigner Mitzi Emery says: "This reports shows what many people have known for a long time - that the staff who work within the council's Adult Services department do a great job, day in, day out." • BIG SPLASH FOR FENHAM POOL
Fenham Pool has been awarded a grant of £160,000 towards the cost of improving the baths. The money will be used to help pay for new equipment and improvements to make the building more energy efficient. This investment should slash Fenham Pool's operating costs and in the long term help make the facility self-sufficient. The grant has been awarded by the Newcastle Arts and Culture Trust, which is funded by Newcastle City Council. Meanwhile, the Fenham and Blakelaw Ward Committees have each given grants of £5,000 to support the pool's running costs. Councillor PJ Morrissey says: "Fenham Pool is a popular local facility used by thousands of people every year since it re-opened three years ago. "This grant will go a long way to helping the pool improve the facilities for the community and be a financial success."
