INCREASE IN FLY-TIPPING IN DENTON WARD

There has been an increase in fly-tipping - mostly household rubbish - across Denton Ward recently.

Councillor Peter Arnold says: "Residents are entitled to four free bulky rubbish collections a year. Just call Envirocall on 0191 274 4000 to arrange collection.

"The council has to charge for some items like fridges and freezers, which by law have to be disposed of carefully. Envirocall will explain this when you call."

NEW SCHEME TO HELP LOCAL RESIDENTS

A new scheme has started in Newcastle to help the elderly and disabled stay in their homes.

Anchor is offering a range of services, including recommending tradesmen to carry out repairs and help and advice.

The organisation also runs its own small repairs service for jobs like fitting a plug, hanging a curtain rail or fixing a tap and charge £5 per hour for work.

Coun Sharon Middleton says: "This service will be of great help to older people and the disabled who want those little jobs around the house done by reputable tradesmen.

GREEN FLAG SUCCESS FOR ST JOHN VIANNEY

St John Vianney RC School has won a Green Flag for its environmental work.

The flag is now proudly flying from a flagpole at the school on Hillhead Road.

Councillor Graham Middleton says: "Congratulations to all the children and teachers involved in winning this award. The ward committee was pleased it could help out by meeting the cost of the flagpole."
