9.25.00am BST (GMT +0100) Wed 3rd Sep 2008

Pupils and teachers at Walbottle Campus are celebrating after recording excellent A-level and GCSE results.

Earlier this year the school was threatened with closure by the Government unless results improved.

Students gaining five or more A* to C GCSEs, including maths and English, rose by 8% to 35% - three years ahead of the Government's schedule of 30%.

The number of students achieving five or more passes at A* to C overall rose by 13% to 63%.

Meanwhile at A-level twice as many students got A or B grades than in 2007.

Councillor Neil Hamilton says: "I congratulate pupils, parents and staff.

"These have been an excellent set of exam results and is testament to everyone's hard work.

"Walbottle is a good school and the new £35m building will raise achievement even higher."

Meanwhile, All Saints College and Sacred Heart recorded 100% A-level pass rate and pupils at St John Vianney School achieved a 100% pass rate at Key Stage 2.
