Great news on GCSE results

3.54.00pm BST (GMT +0100) Thu 27th Aug 2009

Lib Dem parliamentary spokesman for Newcastle East Greg Stone has congratulated students and teachers in Newcastle East's schools after the publication of this year's GCSE results showed a record success level. There was a 5% rise in students getting 5 A-C grades citywide, to 72% - the best ever citywide performance.

Greg said "I am delighted to hear that Newcastle East schools have done so well, and it is a testimony to the hard work of teachers and students. Particular congratulations must go to Benfield School for their outstanding results this year."

"The Lib Dems made improving educational attainment a top priority when we took control of the city council in 2004, and I am delighted that the lessons learned from our educational attainment commission are paying off in terms of A-level and GCSE success"
