Metro reinvigoration is great news for Newcastle East stations

3.35.00pm GMT Fri 4th Dec 2009

Lib Dem parliamentary spokesman for Newcastle East and member of the Tyne & Wear Integrated Transport Authority Greg Stone has welcomed news that the proposed reinvigoration of the Metro network is likely to result in the modernisation of Jesmond, West Jesmond, Byker, Chillingham Road, and Walkergate stations, together with Central Metro station.

The investment programme had previously anticipated upgrades for city centre stations, but the news that more stations will now be included is a success for Lib Dem lobbying to upgrade stations such as Byker and Chillingham Road. However, it is understood that the remaining stations serving Newcastle East - Manors and Longbenton - are not currently included in the plans.

Greg Stone said "As a local councillor and transport authority member I have been lobbying for improvements to Chillingham Road and Byker for some time, as I have been concerned that these stations are badly in need of improvement. Many users of the system feel that these stations are unwelcoming and perceived as unsafe at night.

"I'm delighted that there are plans to upgrade these stations, together with Walkergate and the rather elderly West Jesmond station which is 110 years old and looks increasingly tired. I have asked to meet with the head of Nexus to discuss these plans and very much hope these improvements will be in place within the next three years."
