Working and winning for Newcastle

FAWDON NEWS IN BRIEF

NEW HAIRDRESSING AT HOME SERVICE

Newcastle's "Quality of Life" partnership - funded by the City Council - has developed a mobile hairdressing register "Hairdressing at Home" for older people who don't find it easy to get out to the hairdresser.

The register covers friendly, reliable and properly-vetted hairdressers, and is an addition to the register of other trades people.

A duty officer will find out the older person's requirements and any special needs, will provide the names of up to three hairdressers and can also arrange the appointment.

Ring Age Concern on 232 6488 for more information on this and other "at home" trades services.

FREE HEALTH ADVICE

Anyone who needs confidential, friendly and local advice on stopping smoking, eating healthier or taking exercise just needs to drop into Fawdon Community Centre any Tuesday between 12 noon and 3pm.

A community health trainer will be there to help you improve your lifestyle and develop new habits.

Meanwhile, Active Newcastle is a new initiative which is helping people to get more active more often. This isn't just about directing you to the nearest gym but getting people into dancing or to gentle exercise that is fun and sociable. Check out www.activenewcastle.co.uk or ask at your local library.

A NEW FUTURE FOR THE TRAP?

The Trap on Kenton Road, a pub with a very checkered history, closed some time ago.

There are now proposals to turn it into a Thai restaurant and take away, with staff living on site. Whilst we're keen to see this eyesore of a building turned into something else - and a restaurant would be ideal - residents are concerned about noise, smells, traffic and parking from the very large development of 180 covers that is planned and believe that this seems out of scale in a residential area.
