Labour Government fails to support signing up to 10:10 climate change campaign

A Lib Dem sponsored motion in the House of Commons urging the Government to sign up to the 10:10 campaign to reduce CO2 emissions by 10% by the end of 2010 has been defeated after the Government refused to back it. The vote was lost by 297 to 226.

Greg Stone, Lib Dem parliamentary spokesman for Newcastle East said "This is a deeply disappointing decision by the Labour government which is a snub to the thousands of people and organisations who have signed up to this important campaign. It is particularly regrettable given that Lib Dem and Labour councillors joined forces to support this campaign at a meeting of Newcastle city council earlier this month.Labour have shown the emptiness of their rhetoric on climate change, whilst the Lib Dems are showing real leadership on this issue."
