Garden Village Tree Planting

March 28, 2021 6:31 PM

Over recent months, Cllr Pauline Allen and the Parklands Focus Team have been working with local residents to press the Council to replace trees on Hollywood Avenue in Gosforth Garden Village as well as other locations.

Some replanting was agreed but cuts to budgets (the Council says due to Covid budget pressures) led to the planting during the winter being cancelled. Now the Council have returned, to cut down a small number of diseased trees, but failed to let local residents know about the work. We are concerned that these recent actions by Newcastle City Council without informing local residents shows little respect for the community and a willingness to work in partnership.

We recognise that the trees planted across the community are a unique part of the heritage of the Garden Village that dates back to its inception in the 1920s. In particular, the avenues of trees planted along some of the roads within the Village are important to the visual landscape being an intrinsic part of the design of the streets, as well as contributing to the improvement of local air quality.

More widely, the Council's actions are hardly consistent with its declaration of a Climate Emergency. A coherent Tree Strategy for the City should be part of this response.

Garden Village is not the only local community affected by the Council's actions on this and we are determined to campaign for change.

We have started a campaign to get the Council to invest in a proper tree planting plan, not just in Garden Village but accross the City.
