Honour Alan Shearer on our green

Alan Shearer Green, GrangeWe residents of Grange Estate, Gosforth, and football fans everywhere, call upon Newcastle City Council and other appropriate authorities to name the green in the centre of Park Avenue, Grange after the England and Newcastle captain, and still the Premiership's leading goal scorer, Alan Shearer OBE.

In his autobiography "My illustrated career", the Newcastle legend and inspiration for countless young people describes the debt he owes to this open space.

"They were humble beginnings, no different from many thousands of other Geordie kids, but my childhood on the Park Avenue Estate in Gosforth was exceptional in my eyes. It was there that I learned how to kick a football, or rather I was made to kick one.....When I was old enough to step into the outside world, or rather the patch of grass on the estate near my house, my football education took another step forward."

He also attended Grange First School and Gosforth High School (now Academy). We believe that this proposal will help to encourage budding footballers to follow their dreams, and will remind local people that greatness can come from anywhere.

(Also pictured : Alan Shearer met Cllrs David Down and Pauline Allen when they visited the Grange First School in November 2017 when he opened the Key Stage 2 block) There was a report and video posted here https://www.chroniclelive.co.uk/news/north-east-news/field-gosforth-alan-shearer-honed-14433387
