Planned bridge closures in Dene & South Gosforth Ward
If you live in Dene and South Gosforth Ward, we want your views!
The Council has announced plans to close Castles Farm Bridge and Stoneyhurst Road Bridge to motor vehicles.
This is part of a plan to create Low Traffic Neighbourhoods, and to encourage walking and cycling.
However, concerns have been raised that these modal filters haven't been properly thought out and residents have told us they are worried the proposals could actually make things worse.
The Council wants to reduce the traffic flowing through neighbourhoods, meaning most vehicle journeys' would take place on main roads and drivers would not engage in so called rat-running in order to miss out a potential hold-up. We believe most residents would like to see low traffic neighbourhoods, to improve road safety, but it is essential these are carefully planned and implemented.
We believe that to proceed with this approach without consultation first is wrong, and will simply antagonize local residents. There should be a sensible discussion with residents about proper low traffic neighbourhood schemes in our council ward.
Dene and South Gosforth Councillors are very keen to encourage cycling and walking, which have had a massive boost during lock down, but we want to be sure the right decisions are made. The council may not want to consult with you before they start work but we do. We want to hear your views about these proposed experimental closures, which will be in place initially for 6 months.
Please let us know your views on local traffic and on either or both of the proposed closures.
