All change for Chillingham Road Metro!

7 Feb 2011

After a long campaign lobbying NEXUS, we are pleased to report that work will start next month on refurbishing Chillingham Road Metro station. We have been pressing transport bosses to improve Chillingham Road for a number of years, and are delighted that the station will be one of the first outside of the city centre to benefit from an upgrade, as part of a major programme to improve the network.

We have previously expressed concerns that the station is not particularly welcoming, and that people are often reluctant to use it after dark, and hope that the upgrade will help to address this by improving access, lighting, and security. New ticket machines - which will take cards - will be installed as well.

The work will take 16 weeks and will be carried out during a major closure of the line between Byker and Tynemouth between - this will inevitably cause some inconvenience but a frequent replacement bus service will operate during the closure. Some additional evening and weekend closures may also be necessary.
