EYESORE TO COME DOWN

27 Jul 2008

One of the ugliest buildings in Fawdon Ward is to be demolished, it has been revealed.

Fawdon Park House is to come down and the residents rehoused after four years of campaigning by the local Lib Dem Focus Team.

Councillor Brenda Hindmarsh says: "The quality of the accommodation in the block is just not acceptable by today's standards and modernisation would be difficult and exorbitantly expensive.

"There has been a lot of serious trouble in the blocks, some caused by residents and some by people who get into the building.

"Many of the flats, which are tiny, are empty and the time has come to get rid of the building altogether."

The remaining residents will be helped to find alternative accommodation and the demolition will take account of the need to protect the shopping centre.

Brenda adds: "Many local people think that the shopping centre needs new investment."
