Fenham Update

CCTV Success

Residents have expressed their concerns about anti-social behaviour around the ward. At the regular police liaison committee (called SNAPS), it was agreed to fund jointly with YHN a mobile CCTV system which is now operational and in use by Police.

Fenham Councillor Mitzi Emery said, "As the figures overleaf show crime is falling in the area due in part to initiatives like this. However we must continue to remain vigilant and drive the incidence of crime down even further."


General Hospital - Tesco Gets Go Ahead

The proposal to build a Tesco supermarket at the General Hospital site has been given the go ahead. The issue has caused a split within the community with petitions both in support and against the proposals. Fenham Councillor Colin Daglish said, "We are where we are now as the proposals have been accepted. On the plus side up to 1,000 jobs could be created and well as a world class centre for ageing research which is welcome."

In addition there will be a tree-lined boulevard for walkers and cyclists created through the site, from Westgate Road to Nuns Moor Road.


Holy Cross Church

Following concerns about dog fouling around Holy Cross Church a new bin has been placed there and use of street wardens stepped up to try and curtail the dog fouling on site.

The neighbourhood response team have also been involved in an extensive clean up operation in the area. Mitzi Emery said, "It is great that signs designed by local children to ask residents to clean up after their dogs are also to be erected across the ward."

FAR Centre

Money has been given by the Ward Committee to part finance new kitchens for the FAR (Fenham Association of Residents) Centre.

Mitzi Emery said, "This is a very well used community facility and I am happy to see that they are also looking to extend its facilities with the help of the big lottery fund.
