FINAL ORDERS CALLED ON LEMINGTON'S LAST PUB

24 May 2009

The last pub in Lemington, which has been the centre of the community for decades, is set to close.

Regulars of The Vallum launched a campaign to keep the hostelry open, which was

supported by Councillor Liz Langfield.

"The Vallum is profitable and served a very useful function as a place for people to meet and chat. It's a great shame it is facing closure," she says.

The Lib Dems are backing the Parliamentary 'Save the Pub' campaign after a several pubs in Newcastle closed recently.

Ron Beadle, Newcastle North campaigner, adds: "The Government should do more to support local pubs by lowering beer duty and protecting pubs by changing planning laws."
