Karen Leads Spinney memorial plans

17 Feb 2011

North Heaton Councillor KAREN ROBINSON chairs the Spinney Partnership which has been helping to improve life for people living and working in this part of the ward, including the rebuild of High Heaton library, the new Woodlands Sure Start Centre and the new residents garden at the Spinney Flats.

The group has commissioned an 'interpretation panel' and replanting of trees to remember the Heaton Mine Disaster of May 3rd 1815, where 75 miners, 41 men and 34 boys aged 7 to 82 lost their lives. The group are planning a community event to commemorate this in May to coincide with the anniversary. If you have any family connections or information about the mine, or if you live locally and would like to be involved with the group, the partnership would very much like to hear from you.
