Newcastle Liberal Democrats are celebrating after their candidate, Lawrence Hunter, scored a superb victory over Labour in the Lemington Ward by-election caused by the death of Labour councillor John Gordon.

After a hard-fought campaign, the final result declared on Thursday 30th November had Cllr Hunter on 1180 votes, 365 ahead of Labour on 815 votes. The BNP came a distant third, but the real losers of the night were the Conservatives, trounced into fourth place.
