LEMINGTON'S POST OFFICE IS SAFE FROM CLOSURE

11 Sep 2008

Nine of Newcastle's post offices are to shut - although Lemington's is safe from closure by the Labour Government.

Despite strong campaigns by local residents and the Liberal Democrats the nine branches that were proposed for closure in July will close.

These include Walbottle, West Denton and Brunswick Village.

Under Labour, thousands of Post Offices have already closed. Now another 2,500 are to go.

When the Conservatives were in power 3,500 post offices were closed.

The Liberal Democrat plan to save the Post Office network would see £2 billion invested.

Newcastle MP Doug Henderson backed the closure programme in a vote in Parliament.

Coun Lawrence Hunter said: "Although I am pleased Lemington post office is staying open, I am disappointed that nine branches are closing despite the strong case to keep them open."
