LOCAL NEWS FROM AROUND NORTH HEATON
:: Allotment news
Newcastle's allotments are undergoing something of resurgence as more people become interested in growing their own food.
There are allotment sites in several parts of the ward including St Gabriels, Thropton Terrace, and Iris Brickfield.
Councillor Karen Robinson says: "If you are interested in taking on an allotment plot, please get in touch with us and we will arrange to put you in touch with the allotment officers."
:: Rothbury Terrace
A revised planning application has been made for six apartments on the site of a business premises at 335 Rothbury Terrace.
Councillors and residents successfully opposed a larger application last year.
Councillor Doreen Huddart says: "This one is smaller but we are still concerned about the possible impact on neighbours.
"We will monitor the situation carefully. If you live in the vicinity please let us know what you think.
:: Lottery grant
We are delighted that the Heritage Lottery Fund has confirmed a £4.5 million award for renovations to the Jesmond Dene Parks.
Councillor Doreen Huddart says: "This has been in the pipeline for a long time but the news means that work can now go ahead.
"In addition to improvements to Millfield House and Pets Corner including a visitor centre, we have requested that a more robust road safety plan is introduced to stop irresponsible driving in the Dene."
Paddy Freemans park playground will also receive funding for new equipment.
:: Pedestrian safety
Councillor Greg Stone recently took part in a walkabout with residents and the Living Streets charity that campaigns for removing clutter from streets to make them safer and more attractive.
Greg says: "The event was very useful and Living Streets is to submit a report to the highways department making recommendations for improvements."
A new "driver feedback" speed control sign has finally been installed at the north end of Chillingham Road and double yellow lines have been extended at Cartington Terrace to improve sightlines to help cut accidents.
:: Parking problems
Councillor Doreen Huddart has asked Highways to include parking restrictions on the junctions of Sackville Road with Whitefield Terrace and Danby Gardens.
Doreen says: "Parking problems were making it very difficult for the Number 1 bus to pass through safely, causing delays to services and damage to wing mirrors and paintwork."
