Time to get on with Dunblane Cresent New Houses

When the credit crunch happened and the housing market collapsed, the plans to demolish the rest of the Dunblane Crescent flats were put on hold. Private builders pulled out of sites all over the city and the chance of building on the part of the site off Thornley Road that was demolished in 2008 was almost zero.

"This is a great shame because the 40 houses, flats and bungalows that were built before the credit crunch have been very popular" said Denton Councillor Graham Middleton.

Under the Labour Government, house building was the lowest for decades, prices escalated so first time buyers were priced out and waiting lists grew. The Coalition Government has created a "new homes bonus" to incentivise councils to get together with developers and kick-start the market.

The Liberal Democrat Council is already building the first council houses in the city for 25 years, through its housing company Your Homes Newcastle.

Your local councillors are now calling for the Dunblane site to be developed by Your Homes Newcastle in partnership with a developer, either on the small site already cleared or by accelerating the demolition of the remaining three story blocks and developing the site as a whole.
