TYNESIDE SELECTED FOR 2018 WORLD CUP GAMES

1 Jan 2010

World Cup football will be coming to Tyneside if England wins the right to host the 2018 tournament.

Newcastle has been named as one of the 12 cities to be included in England's bid.

The bid was supported by football legends such as Jack Charlton, Alan Shearer, Peter Beardsley, Paul Gascoigne and David Ginola.

Newcastle Gateshead's application included using Gateshead International Stadium, Newcastle United academy and the recently proposed Gateshead Football Club Stadium as training grounds.

Details of hotels to be used by VIPs and supporters, as well as proposed fan parks, were also included in the bid.

It is estimated the World Cup would give the North East a £58 million boost through extra tourism, as well as a legacy for grassroots sport.
