WESTERHOPE WHEEL UNVEILED

7 Aug 2008

Hundreds of people have attended a local heritage festival, which saw the official unveiling of the Westerhope Wheel.

The Wheel has been installed on the roundabout at West Denton Way and Stamfordham Road and has been restored and reclaimed from Ellington Colliery.

The festival was organised by the Westerhope Community Partnership, along with Westerhope Community Association, the Westerhope councillors and Newcastle City Council.

It was funded by the ward committees from Denton, Woolsington, Westerhope, Newburn and Lemington and the Westerhope Community Partnership.

Ron Beadle says: "The Wheel celebrates Westerhope's heritage and is a wonderful landmark recognising this area's mining history.

"It also acts as a symbolic entrance to the village."
