CANCER CAMPAIGN THANKS BEADLE FOR SUPPORT

18 Jan 2010

A senior Newcastle Liberal Democrat has been praised for signing up to a campaign to beat cancer.

Ron Beadle, who is challenging Labour in Newcastle North, has signed Cancer Research UK's Cancer Commitment.

The charity is asking all Parliamentary candidates to sign up to the commitment.

Cancer Research UK said that in the last 30 years the 10-year survival rates have doubled but the five-year survival lag behind other European countries.

The campaigning is demanding that government takes action to:

:: Detect cancer earlier

:: Provide world class treatment

:: Prevent more cancers

:: Tackle cancer inequality

:: Protect the UK's research base

Ron Beadle, who lost a family relative to cancer last year, said: "It's vitally important that research continues into finding a cure for cancer.

"If I am elected I will be a strong advocate for research and development and for the important contributions made to this work by scientists in Newcastle.

"I urge all other Parliamentary candidates in the city to make this commitment."
