Council Leader accepts Friends of the Earth challenge over carbon emissions

8 Nov 2007

Councillor John Shipley has met with Friends of the Earth at the Core Cities conference in Nottingham. FoE are challenging Councils across the UK to reduce their carbon emissions by 3% per year.

Cllr Shipley said: "The Government has not done enough to tackle climate change, the biggest issue facing humanity. Carbon emissions are still rising, and a leaked memo recently revealed that Labour are trying to water down European targets for renewable energy."

Newcastle East Parliamentary Spokesman, Cllr Stephen Psallidas continued: "In contrast to Labour's spin and floundering, the Lib Dems have a detailed plan to make the UK entirely carbon-neutral by 2050. That is, _no_ net emissions of carbon dioxide. At a local level, we will be doing everything we can to achieve this in Newcastle."
