The joint Fawdon and Parklands Ward meeting last Thursday to discuss Red House Farm FC proposals for fences around pitches north of Kingston Park Road was a turbulent affair and didn't do anything much to further mutual understanding. Residents still have time to make their views known before the issue goes back to the Planning Committee for determination. Emailpaul.mckinnell@newcastle.gov.uk
The long-delayed work by the Council to remove damaged and dangerous play equipment in Fawdon Park seems to have been done without paying any attention to the uneven and equally dangerous surfacing - after our complaints hopefully it will have been done by the time you read this - or very shortly.
Pavement parking is an issue in various places around our area, and part of our ward (south of the Metro line) will be included in a trial initiative being developed by the Police and Crime Commissioner's office. Pavement parking isn't illegal, but it is where it obstructs safe access. In the trial area letters will be sent to residents asking them to try to avoid parking on pavements but where they need to (e.g. to maintain access to other drivers on narrow streets) to maintain a minimum 5ft access on the pavement. Police officers will patrol and (initially) issue warning notices where this is not met. There will be a special email address for residents to report concerns - pavementparking@newcastle.gov.uk - and you can call on 101. As part of this push to raise awareness there will also be work with local schools - including a competition to design a poster than can be used locally. If this awareness campaign fails to improve the situation then stronger enforcement action will follow.
Red House Farm Art Group meets at The Northumbrian Piper every other Tuesday, and consists of people of all abilities who simply enjoy art. It formed in October 2013 thanks to the kindness of the proprieters of the pub John & Lynn Griffin. The Club welcomes new members who enjoy sketching, painting, etc (minimum age 18yrs), so whether you're a budding Monet or Van Gogh or simply enjoy sketching and a social chat, then why not come and join them between 7 - 9pm every other Tuesday. For further details please contact the Secretary Ed Turns on 07709970635 or email: edwardturns@yahoo.co.uk
If you or your family might be interested in basketball - please note this message; "My name is Iain Jordan and I am the chairman of Kenton Basketball Club. We play in the TyneMet Basketball League and have been based at Kenton School for the last three years. We currently run two adult teams and hire the sports hall at Kenton School each Monday and Friday evenings. We wish to grow Kenton Basketball Club by adding three junior sides at ages U16, U14 and U12. Our adult sides are comprised mainly of residents from Kenton and the immediately surrounding area and we wish to provide basketball opportunities to younger people for their enjoyment in the short and medium term, and to 're-stock' our adult teams in the long term as our current players become older. Contact me on iainjordan@hotmail.com"
