Fight Labour's Slash and Burn Budget Proposals in Newcastle!

20 Jan 2013

The Labour council leader talks of Newcastle being targeted for the biggest hit, but ignores the fact that councils in the North East receive on average £300 per
head more than the South East. He is also silent about the fact that Sunderland, Hartlepool, Middlesbrough and South Tyneside all face bigger cuts than Newcastle but are not planning to close as many local facilities.

Labour refuses to recognise that the last Labour Government almost bankrupted the country. Yet Ed Miliband accepts the cuts and won't reverse them. He also said public sector workers should accept a pay freeze.

We believe the cuts of £39 million over the next three years are too high and we are campaigning for some reduction. We accept that if wewere still running the council we would have had to make big savings. But these cuts look to us as a political move rather than Labour managing our city in the best way. They must spread them more fairly and find ways of protecting services - as other councils seem to be able to do.

Petition: Newcastle City council are proposing to close Castle Dene and Cheviot View short break units as part of their budget cuts. These are purpose built units and fully equipped to offer overnight short breaks and emergency crisis care to vulnerable adults and children with complex physical/learning disabilities. The units are a lifeline for carers allowing them a much needed overnight break from the stressesand strains associated with caring for a loved one.
