Fire at Henderson Hall devastates building
Heaton residents were shocked and horrified when a major fire devastated Newcastle University’s Henderson Hall.
On Thursday 8th June, emergency services were alerted to the beginnings of a fire at the disused Hall. This, as many will be aware, built into a devastating blaze which has rendered the future of the Grade II listed building uncertain.
Investigations into the cause of the fire are as yet ongoing, but arson is suspected, and the police have made two arrests. Fortunately, no one was injured.
The emergency services’ response was both swift and robust but could not prevent major damage to the Hall.
Liberal Democrat councillors in Manor Park ward, where the building is situated, met with Newcastle University’s Head of Estates to discuss the situation and to gain information regarding the University’s plans for the site. Whilst it had been thought that the Hall, prior to the fire, might be converted into retirement apartments, it had been decided that this was not a viable plan on account of accessibility issues.
Only once a full assessment of the remaining structure has been conducted can a decision be made as to whether the beautiful building must be demolished or can be restored. This decision will undoubtedly impact upon future plans for the site.
Councillors also pressed for information regarding playing fields surrounding the site, stressing that if these are to be developed into sporting facilities, it is vital that consideration is given to the management of parking and access in order that local residents are not severely inconvenienced.
Whilst it remains unclear what will happen to the footprint of the Henderson Hall site, the disused playing fields are a cause of concern to residents and it is hoped that decisions can be made more swiftly as to their purpose.
Councillors also emphasised the need for the University to be transparent in communications regarding the site, and to commit to consultation with the local community regarding any emerging plans.
