Labour's plan to axe bus shelters revealed

25 Jul 2016

Bus shelters across Newcastle are at risk of being removed, the Evening Chronicle has revealed.

Newcastle City Council is currently negotiating a new contract for the supply of shelters across the city.

And when pressed, the council admitted that the bus shelters not in their ownership - which is the majority - are at risk of removal if an agreement is not soon reached.

The opposition Liberal Democrat group said that councillors were concerned about the situation and called for "urgent action".

Blakelaw Lib Dem campaigner, Ciaran Morrissey, said: "I can't think of anything more likely to inconvenience bus users and discourage potential passengers than waiting for a bus whilst exposed to the elements - it may not be so bad in summer weather, but I fear that bus passengers including many older folk in my area face a miserable winter if bus shelters are removed.

"The council needs to act urgently to address these concerns."
