At the meeting of Newcastle City Council last week, a whipped Labour group voted down this motion from the Liberal Democrats :

"Council congratulates Team GB's sportsmen and women for their wonderful achievements at the Rio Olympics and hopes that their success will help take public participation in sport to new levels.

Council requests:

Cabinet to explore the possibility of staging a second Year of Exercise and Sport in 2018, this being an unfulfilled commitment following a previous resolution of council."
