Leading Liberal Democrats peer to speak on What price integration? in Newcastle

As part of the Northumbria University Public Lecture Series, Rt. Hon. The Lord Dholakia OBE, PC, DL, Deputy Leader, Liberal Democrats, House of Lords, will speak on the subject of What Price Integration?

Synopsis

Lord Dholakia will trace the early days of migration, arguing that planning failure accompanied by differential treatment of many commonwealth citizens almost resulted in the creation of separate and disparate communities. He will suggest that early colonial migrants arrived to a country that lacked the imagination or courage to address its past and begin to create itself anew.

Lord Dholakia will outline the beneficial legislation that has supplemented the Equality and Human Rights Commission role. He will discuss how third and fourth generations growing up in Britain demonstrate remarkable resilience, despite the continuous migration dialogue resulting from the recent EU referendum.

The lecture will highlight how the North East, through strong leadership and community spirit, has embraced diversity and encouraged cultural integration. It will also reflect on future opportunities and challenges and how the UK defines integration and the relevance of identity in the present debate about immigration.



About the Speaker
Lord Dholakia was elected President of the Liberal Democrats in 2000 and appointed Deputy Leader in 2004. He is President of Nacro, the crime reduction charity and the Mental Health Foundation and a member of its Research and Development Board. He is also the Vice-Chairman of the Policy Research Institute on Aging and Ethnicity.
Lord Dholakia has held senior roles with the Commission for Racial Equality and the Police Complaints Authority. He was appointed as Deputy Lieutenant for the County of West Sussex in June 1999.
