Movable Speed Monitors for Walkergate’s Streets

19 Jan 2011

Radar speed monitor signs will soon be appearing on streets across Walkergate ward that are affected by speeding traffic. This is a result of a project between Councillors Pauline and Peter Allen and the Council's highways engineers reported in Walkergate Focus 77.

These "state of the art" signs flash up a vehicle's speed as it passes, changing colour if the speed exceeds the limit. But they also record speeds and allow them to be monitored remotely so that enforcement action can be better targeted. The signs are solar/battery powered and fit into sockets built into the pavement so that they
can be moved between hotspots on a regular basis, allowing them to be more effective.

Initially, the signs will be used on roads where speeds are known to frequently exceed legal limits, including Stotts Road, Ennerdale Road, Welbeck Road, Westbourne Avenue, Appletree Gardens, Shields Road, Kentmere Avenue, Pembroke Avenue, Sutton Street and Coutts Road. Other streets can be included as necessary. Police enforcement action will back up the use of the signs.
