Nestle to cut nearly 300 jobs in North – Brexit blamed
Newcastle Liberal Democrats have reacted angrily to the news that almost 300 jobs are to be axed at Nestle sites in the north east - including at Fawdon in the City.
"The workforce are telling us that 110 local jobs will disappear over the next two years," said Anita Lower, the Leader of the Opposition on Newcastle City Council and the Liberal Democrats candidate for Newcastle North, where the Fawdon factory is situated, who visited the plant recently.
"The falling value of the pound following the Brexit decision has made imported raw materials prices more expensive. We believe that by moving to Poland, the company is seeking to protect its market position within the EU, as we have previously warned companies would do. Brexit means job losses.
"It is especially disappointing news in the 60th anniversary year of production at Fawdon, and following the closure of the Sanofi pharmaceuticals site next door two years ago. The company had added to staff numbers and created new apprenticeships over the past 2 years."
A company spokesman said "These proposals are being made by Nestle UK to ensure that these sites operate more efficiently and remain competitive in a rapidly changing external environment."
