Newcastle Liberal Democrats have accused the Conservative party of a "stitch up" after Rishi Sunak was appointed by Conservative MPs as Prime Minister without the public being given say.

The Liberal Democrats have tabled a Bill in Parliament calling for an election by the 1st December.

Responding to Rishi Sunak being appointed the third Conservative Prime Minister in three months, Liberal Democrat Spokesperson for Newcastle Cuntral, Mark Ridyard, said:

"This Conservative Party stitch-up has left the country with another out of touch Prime Minister who nobody voted for.

"Rishi Sunak has shown time and time again that he doesn't understand the challenges facing struggling families and pensioners - whether it's paying their heating bills this winter or waiting weeks to see a GP or dentist. We didn't vote for this.

"The Conservative Party has trashed the British economy, pushed our local health services to the brink, and added hundreds of pounds to people's monthly mortgage payments.

"People are fed up with this Conservative government taking our area for granted. It's time give local people a say over the country's future through a general election."

The Liberal Democrats have tabled a Presentation Bill to call for an early general election. A Presentation Bill is a type of Private Members Bill that can be tabled by any MP. The MP reads the title of the bill out at First Reading with the bill then scheduled for debate at a future sitting Friday:

General Election (Date) Bill

Bill to amend the Dissolution and Calling of Parliament Act 2022 to provide for a general election to be held no later than 1 December 2022; and for connected purposes
