SHOPPING CENTRE REDEVELOPMENT DELAY

21 May 2009

Work on completing the redevelopment of West Denton Shopping Centre is going ahead as planned.

However, two problems have arisen recently that have caused some delay to the multi-million pound project.

Newcastle campaigner Ron Beadle explains: "The first is that mine shafts have been discovered under the old car park, which were not on the plans given to the developers.

"This will delay the finishing of the new car park by several weeks.

"The second delay has been caused by one of the current tenants agreeing to move to a new building, which has held up progress."

The £20 million scheme includes a Morrisons store, health centre and other local shops and car parking. CCTV cameras will also be installed to help protect shops and prevent crime and anti-social behaviour.
